I'm teaching myself to play guitar and my fingertips are killing me. So far Ive got the G & C-Major chords down, I wanna be able to play California Dreamin' by The Mamas & the Papas by the end of the year. Have a photo of a flower I took yesterday for your time:

Bah, you'll have it down by the end of the summer.
You're well on your way; throw some D minor and A# minor (I think that's about it; I haven't heard that song in forever) in there and you're set.
The callouses will come pretty quickly. How long have you been playing?

So manly he may eventually have to wear a glove of vaseline, to keep his hand soft for his wife :D

I was about to say fast-track callous develpoment by playing bass but - you have more fingers in contact when playing chords - I wonder which works faster, rougher, thicker strings or multiple strings at once :D

You sir/mam, deserve a high five just for mentioning bass. I am proud of you, bass tends to be neglected/forgotten by most when you can just be a drummer or guitarist, :(.
The strings of a guitar are really thin, like needle size. If you're not used to it after playing for a bit,it'll feel like needles. The bass guitar strings are wider, and cover a larger area though. I think bass will build them up quicker.
I can stop playing bass for months and come back, after my callus's are gone, and play with no problems.

Same here when it comes to returning to bass! And same here that we both started on bass, and later on went to pick up guitar. I can't suggest this for guitar as you need to be "dainty" but when I would blister (picking hand) I would make "fingercondoms" with that clear generic packaging plastic and rubber bands :D Guitar strings DO feel like needles dear lord they do :D If you are learnign acoustic you could restring the top 3 in nylon? Much nicer on the hands during your "incubation"

Congrats on learning an instrument! It's one of those things that I think everyone should do once in their life.
Stick with it, you'll get it down eventually. And the best way to learn self-taught is to learn a favorite song, so you're already on the right track!
Are you reading tabs or sheet music?

Lol, I just play bass, haven't really tried guitar. I have played with my wife's guitar, so I know how it feels. My fingers are a bit chubby, plus since I read bass clef, bass was easier, :)

I'm learning on a classical guitar, so all the strings are nylon

Depending on how much you play, after a month or so, you'll be pretty tough.

Well I did try guitar never got serious but I had a cheap acoustic that I could jam along to songs and try different things, smashed it in anger a long time ago and just been out of touch since

Cheap instruments are nice.
I sort of feel bad now, my father-in-law lent me an accordion to learn to play, and I need to try again....

Oh it is cool. It's so heavy, you have two straps to wear it with, think a front-wards backpack. Plus playing is difficult. The right side is laid out like a piano. The one I has the right setup to play in three different modes, a low octave, a hight octave, or both notes at the sane time.
The right side is full of (I think) 100+ keys, each playing three or four notes. It's laid out in a fashion where C and D aren't by each, but it's more like C and F (notes that go with each other).
It's difficult to learn, but when you hear those bellows pump out a note, it's hard to resist, :).
Have you ever tried banjo? It involves a lot of finger picking , but is really fun to play too!

I wish! I actually haven't tried most instruments of the world but I studied them all, especially to be able to recognise their timbres in music tests (I studied music technology) What is it about a banjo that gives it the twang? Is it the strings or is it that snare drum looking body?

I believe it's the body, I found this too [ https://medium.com/the-physics-ar… ].
The body is technically a snare drum, and the bridge isn't fixed to the drum head. That, combined with a metal body.....magic, :)
